As we are getting back to a more normal life, a few of us will be travelling this summer, hopefully enjoying a bit of a break from our daily routine. Whether you are staying home or going away, this article will give you some advice on how to stay healthy this summer with homeopathy.
My family and I have benefited from a lot of those remedies and have found it is handy to go out with a small first aid kit – so you are ready to expect the unexpected!
Day to day remedies
Injuries, accidents, concussions
Arnica 30C or 200C. Arnica cream may also be applied to bruises or bumps as long as the skin is not broken.
Calendula can be used if you get wounded. You can apply Calendula tincture diluted into warm water, and/or you can take Calendula 30C two to three times a day.
Insect bites (mosquitos, bees, etc)
First try Apis 30C or 200C. If this isn’t helping, Ledum is another good remedy for insect bites. Hypericum will be indicated if there is shooting pain from the bite, which is aggravated by touch or pressure. It is also useful to apply Ledum mother tincture on the bites.
Exposure to the sun
To avoid sunburn, take Sol Britannic 30C before going out in the sun and then every hour (use Sol Australis if going to the South hemisphere). The remedy can also be taken for minor sunburn to help recover more quickly. Also apply Aloe Vera gel or Calendula cream to the skin if you get burnt.
For sunburns that blister and are better for cold applications take Cantharis 30C.
If the sunburn stings and itch, take Urtica Urens 30C.
If your skin swells up, is red and watery blisters form, take Apis 30C.
Heat stroke or sun stroke
If your main symptoms are redness, high fever, photophobia and/or headache, thirstless, try Belladonna 30C.
Heatstroke can be harmful if not treated immediately. The NHS offer some useful practical advice for cooling down and state when to call 999.
Headaches from too much sun
Natrum Muriaticum can be very useful if you get a headache or other ailments from too much sun. Headaches helped by this remedy are throbbing and worse for moving the head or the eye balls. You will feel better in a dark room and feel quite thirsty for water.
Glonoinum is another useful remedy for those who have spent too long in the sun and experience a throbbing and bursting headache. You head may feel heavy but you can’t lay down.
Food poisoning
Arsenicum Album 30C. The person needing this remedy will have burning diarrhoea and/or vomiting, together with anxiety and will want to be with someone all the time. They may also feel restless and need to sip (warm) drinks frequently.
Travel remedies
Fear of flying / panic attacks
If you fear flying and suffer from panic attacks, try Aconite 30C or 200C. The symptoms come on suddenly, and you may feel restlessness, fear of death and accidents and suffer from palpitations.
Argentum Nitricum is another good remedy for fear of flying and panic attacks. The person needing this remedy will feel nervous anxiety and be compelled to do something. There may be associated explosive diarrhoea.
Travel sickness
Cocculus 30C, the main remedy for travel sickness. The main symptoms include nausea, vomiting and dizziness.
Nux Vomica 30C (or lower) if you are feeling chilly, sensitive to noise and worse for food and coffee. There may be nausea but no vomiting.
Jetlag
Use Arnica and Cocculus 30C in alternation. Take them every 3-4 hours during the journey and continue for the following 2 to 3 days, 3 times a day if necessary.
A few more tips
Avoid staying in the sun too long and make sure you use natural sun cream. Helios provides a range of sun protections for the family.
Wearing a hat and sunglasses also help to protect your skin and eyes from the sun.
Make sure you drink plenty of fluids, particularly when it is hot. During the summer, the body is more likely to sweat so it is important to stay hydrated. If it is particularly hot and you are sweating a lot, drink fruit juices and eat salty food so that your body retains some of the water and minerals. You might even want to get some re-hydration sachets if you have been very active as you will have lost some vital minerals through sweat.
