People often ask how to take homeopathic remedies, so here is a simple guide. Do get in touch in you need further advice.
How to take the remedy
The remedy prescribed will usually come in the form of a sucrose pill. This pill should be simply dissolved in your mouth. Do not swallow the pill with water.
Tablets and powders should also be dissolved in the mouth.
For babies and young children, you can crush the pill between two spoons and dab the powder into the mouth of the little one. Alternatively, dissolve a couple of pills in their water bottle and let them sip it throughout the day.
What to avoid during a homeopathic treatment
It is recommended that you do not eat or drink at least 10 minutes before or after taking the remedy (drinking water is fine).
Please also avoid brushing your teeth using mint or peppermint toothpaste, or wait at least 10 minutes before brushing your teeth after taking the remedy.
Other substances may be antidote to homeopathic remedies such as coffee, camphor and eucalyptus and so it is best to avoid them during the length of the treatment.
How often to take the remedy
This advice is for acute complaints (your homeopath will be guiding you for chronic complaints).
The frequency depends on the severity of the complaint. Sometimes, one pill is enough.
- For minor complaints, take a pill every four hours. Then space out the doses as the symptoms improve and only take a dose when you feel the symptom is returning.
- For more severe complaints, take a pill every two hours. Then space out the doses as the symptoms improve and only take a dose when you feel the symptom is returning.
- For serious conditions, take a pill every half hour. Doses can be taken more frequently if necessary. Then space out the doses as the symptoms improve and only take a dose when you feel the symptom is returning.
Note: if there is no improvement after 4 doses, then a different remedy should be chosen.
