During this time of isolation, one of the few pleasures we have left is indulging in nice food and a few drinks. I am certainly guilty of eating a little bit more than usual and succumbing to my weakness for chocolate! Perhaps a few of us have had a few more drinks than usual to help soothe anxiety… Or perhaps a few of us eat to combat boredom…
And now we have the end of year festivities coming up, with more prospects of eating rich food!
Luckily, homeopathy has many remedies to offer to relieve the symptoms of over-indulgence.
If you have over-indulged and feeling the after-effects of eating or drinking too much, then you might want to try one of the following homeopathic remedies (in addition to any conventional medication that you may use):
- Nux Vomica
This is the number one hang-over remedy. It is also a very good remedy if you who have eaten too much and are feeling nauseous, and you want to vomit but cannot. The remedy also is a natural assist for constipation and works particularly well if you feel chilly and very irritable when ill.
- Arsenicum Album
This is a great remedy for food or drink poisoning. It eases patients whose excretions are offensive and leave them exhausted and cold. It is particularly effective if you have burning pains despite feeling chilly and are thirsty but will only drink in sips. If you feel better for some company, and have underlying anxiety about your health, you will typically thrive on this remedy.
- Carbo Vegetabilis
This remedy is useful if eating rich food has caused much flatulence. It can assist where there is a feeling of fullness, and tight closing around the waist aggravates the symptoms. It is usually effective if you feel sluggish and wish to be fanned. Bringing up wind will relieve temporarily the symptoms.
- China
This remedy is similar to Carbo Veg as there is a lot of flatulence from eating rich food, however passing wind does not bring relief. The stomach and abdomen are bloated and swollen. The food that particularly bring indigestion are fish and fruit; wine and milk also bring indigestion.
- Pulsatilla
Pulsatilla is one of the main remedies to consider for indigestion after eating rich food such as pork or cream. You may have pressing pain in the stomach and have heartburn. Children needing this remedy are likely to suffer from diarrhoea after eating rich food or fruit. Whether a child or an adult, you will do well on this remedy if you have the above symptoms and also crave fresh air and lack thirst.
- Ipecacuhana
This remedy is particularly appropriate for any complaint associated with persistent nausea. Similar to Pulsatilla, children may have diarrhoea after eating rich food (particularly pork and ice cream). If you feel worse in a stuffy room but better in open air and have no appetite or thirst, you will probably do well on this remedy. In addition, you may be easily offended or irritable; but if you feel weepy and desire company then Pulsatilla would be a more appropriate remedy.
- Natrum Carbonicum
The indigestion comes on because your nervous system is exhausted. The main symptoms are nausea and sour burping and you will also suffer from stomach pain. Your symptoms are worse in a stuffy room.

A word of caution:
These remedies will help if your symptoms only occur once in a while. If you eat rich food or drink too much every day, then those remedies will stop relieving your symptoms. You may want to consider addressing the root cause of the issue and seek professional help to support you during those challenging times. There are many homeopathic remedies that can help address anxiety, fears or other issues such as bulimia and can be used alongside conventional medicine or other therapies such as counselling.
